Under 25s or over 70s may have a problem finding cheaper car insurance and will certainly ending up paying more for their policies. Specialist insurance brokers and online articles and sites like ours can often help provide informative knowledge as to how young drivers can keep down the high costs charged in exchange for their cover. Under 25's should consider adding a parent to their policy as this shows maturity, but think very seriously about having their parents front as the main policy holder or main driver. This practice is illegal and will nullify the policy if perpetrators are caught. Young drivers should consider taking a Pass Plus course instead as for a hundred or so pounds you could immediately benefit from discounts of between 20 and 30 percent, and gain invaluable driving experience.
It is sadly true that drivers under 20 lack the experience required behind the wheel and are prone to show off by speeding etc. This does translate into higher accident rates for teenage drivers and statistics rule the car insurance industry! Many insurers load their young drivers premiums purely to ensure that they do not win a teenage driver's business and others simply do not offer them cover. Those that do, take higher than average chances insuring younger drivers and therefore charge premiums of around £1000! As a driver under 25 you should seriously consider buying a smaller car which does not have loads of mod cons such as air conditioning, electric seat warmers, in-built sat-nav systems and on board computers. For that matter please also think twice about buying a used car with a big engine simply because it's cheap to buy one: the road tax, fuel consumption and repairs are one of the reasons it's so cheap. Many older drivers simply can not afford to drive them!
Look for a conventional car with limited or preferably no modifications
so you don't give the insurer the impression that you are a 'boy
racer'. There are many insurers who may seem to have higher prices
for younger drivers, but this can really change for mature drivers
with some experience behind the wheel of a car. With just four or
more years of no claims and passing the age of 25, you will often
see a raft of top UK insurance companies who would be very happy
to provide you with cover that you may not have considered a few
years back. Over 70's could try SAGA (www.saga.co.uk); if you are
over 40 then why not try Renew Insurance Services Ltd. (www.renewinsurance.com)
Cars are getting cheaper and as the population's increases so has the number of young drivers. It was not so long ago that most homes had just one, perhaps two, cars on the front drive, but today almost every student has his independence and what better way to express your independence than through your car! Yes, young drivers numbers are on the increase in Britain and around the world. Not the most competitive car insurance market it has to be said, but there are still some fantastic deals to be had by younger drivers. You need to look around though and speak to insurers or brokers to ensure that you are actually getting the best deal.
Young drivers are seen seen as a higher risk in the car insurance
sector here in the UK. The main reason is that all insurance companies
write insurance based on risk and that boils down to statistics;
the statistics show that young drivers are more prone to have an
accident than their older counterparts. The odd thing is though
that statistically they are actually less likely to speed than older
drivers who are in their 30's! But its not about speeding,
it is about accidents and that is where young drivers seem to have
a bigger statistical challenge than more senior or experienced drivers.
Consider taking an advanced drivers course or Pass Plus. For a list
of driving schools have a look here later >> Driving Schools
So what it boils down to is that young drivers face car insurance premiums which often surpass the actual value of their cars! Crazy I know.
Keep Costs Minimal
- Buy a smaller car
- Keep the engine capacity down
- Buy a more efficient car and save on car tax too
- Park on the drive if possible, not the street
- Take an advanced drivers course
- Limit your annual mileage as much as possible
- Have a good car alarm fitted if you can afford it
- Buy a car in a low car insurance group
Now as I said above the most logical answer is to ask your parents to insure you as a named driver on their policies; great in theory, but there are some rules or conditions attached! You must not be the main driver.
How would you determine this is a fair question to ask here? Simply put, whose car is it? If it is your car there is no way that your dad is the main driver is there? If not, you're committing fraud and almost every UK car insurance company would not cover you when you make a claim. They are used to this loophole and can quite clearly tell if the car is actually yours or not. Spoilers, stickers, fluffy dice and the sports kit all give it away at the scene of the accident!
So where does this leave you as a young driver? Many younger drivers are forced to opt for the cheapest car insurance deals they can find! To make it worse, most uk car insurance companies are doing away with 3rd party only insurance, which incidentally is the cheapest in most cases. The reason is possibly twofold here!
One - it discourages younger drivers from taking their insurance policies; Two, the limited cover provided leaves very little profit; Three, people who buy fully comprehensive car insurance are willing to pay more for their cover which suggests to the insurer that that person believes they have more to lose should they have an accident! Non of this is based on pure facts, so please do not run off to the FSA right now, I am only suggesting that if you start to think along the lines suggested here, it is easier to see why younger drivers are finding it very difficult to buy cheap young persons car insurance.
Thankfully, there are a number of UK car insurance companies which are trying to give young drivers a better deal! The advent of car insurance comparison web sites like Gocompare.com and Confused.com have been instrumental in helping young drivers find a better deal on their car insurance premiums. So to have specialist companies like Endsleigh and Performance Direct.
Get a quote from at least two or three sources so that you can
